Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, AMD Ryzen 4000 APU, gaining Performance

Ubuntu

Last December, Linux 5.16 brought performance optimizations to Zen 3-based Ryzen 5000 APUs (codenamed Cezanne and Lucienne). Although Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is based on the Linux 5.15 kernel, AMD processors also perform very well.

According to Phoronix’s latest measurements, the Ryzen 4000 APU codenamed “Renoir” has an excellent performance gain on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS compared to Ubuntu 20.04.4 LTS. The performance gains on the AMD platform are also much more pronounced than on Intel’s 10th Gen Comet Lake processors, suggesting that Ryzen is finally making a lot of long-overdue optimizations.

For this test, Phoronix used several OnLogic fanless edge embedded PCs. On the Intel side, there is the OnLogic Helix 500 with a Core i7-10700T eight-core sixteen-thread (8C/16T) 35W CPU. At the same time, on the AMD side, the OnLogic ML100G-41 is used, equipped with an 8C/16T Ryzen 4800U 15W APU.

The first to unfold is the integrated graphics processor (IGP) test. AMD’s performance gain is better than Intel’s Comet Lake i7 SKU on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Next, we have some tests that utilize the CPU, where the performance improvement of the 4800U on the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS system is also very noticeable.

Overall, the AMD Ryzen 4800U Renoir APU gained nearly 8.7% on Ubuntu 22.04. Meanwhile, the Intel Comet Lake Core i7-10700T showed a much smaller improvement, at 0.7 percent. For a more detailed comparison visit the Phoronix website.
