Google Pixel Watch: Some good news for the wearable fans

Google Pixel Watch

How many years are we waiting for a Google Pixel Watch? At least since 2016, some much longer. Google I/O 2022 is supposed to bring salvation. Next Wednesday (May 11) it’s that time again, Google is holding its own developer conference and will provide information about all kinds of news at a keynote there. New hardware is not a priority there, but that could be different again this year.

Google smartwatch has been overdue since 2014

As I mentioned in the introduction, a Google Pixel Watch has been at the top of my wish list for many years. But the topic has only become much more concrete in the last year. After a handful of leaks, about which we still had serious doubts at the time, hints followed directly in the app source code from Google, the first product pages in online shops and finally more images and the first photos. The Pixel Watch is coming!

And we have arrived at the week of truth. The situation has worsened that Google will at least briefly present its first own smartwatch at the Google I/O 2022 Keynote (7 p.m.). Eight years after the introduction of Wear OS or Android Wear, a Google smartwatch is more than overdue. Google has made notebooks, smartphones, tablets, streaming devices, headphones and other hardware, but there has never been a smartwatch before.

Restart with Samsung and Fitbit

In the past year, however, a lot has happened around Wear OS. Samsung is fully involved and is now developing the software together with Google. A few months earlier, the Fitbit acquisition was complete. Google has more know-how than ever before in this product area. 365 days after the big reboot of Wear OS, Google almost owes us our own pixel smartwatch.
